Free carpool transportation on The Nature Bus
Travel time: 35 minutes, 28 miles Cape Charles, VA 23310 through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel
7:15 – 7:45 Meet at REI. Check-in process, use restroom before boarding the bus (no RR on bus), put your sac lunch into designated coolers (no food or drink permitted on the bus)
7:45 – 9:00 Travel time to Cape Charles, VA
8:30 – 9:00 disembark from bus, restroom and snack break
9:00 – 11:00 Wildflower Walk, focused on what is edible
11:00 – 12:30 Picnic lunch and independent rest time (nap in your tree hammocks? Or bring a towel; or walk around the park)
12:30 – 3:30 CHOICE of:
- Fishing & Crabbing (everything you need provided)
- Guided nature hike
3:30 – 4:00 restroom and snack break (2 groups meet up again)
4:00 – 5:30 Your own chill time, may include:
- Nap in your tree hammock
- Option to rent a kayak (bring cash; not expensive)
- Option to rent a bicycle (bring cash; not expensive)
- Explore the park
5:30 – 7:00 grill your dinner on charcoal grills in the park (we’ll provide charcoal); you can prepare and cook up your fish and crabs for grilling/boiling.
7:00 – 8:30ish (until 30 min before sundown) – S’Mores around the campfire. Feel free to bring your portable musical instruments. Bring your ghost stories
Optional if the group would like to do this: 8:30ish – 10 Guided owl prowl night hike
10:00 – 10:30 travel back to REI
Bring:
Quick pocket snacks such as trail mix and/or granola bars
Sac lunch (put into coolers provided)
Sac dinner and something to you might want to put onto the charcoal grill (we will provide the cooler with ice to keep your items fresh and cold)
Water in water bottle
Sunscreen
Insect repellent or netted bug suit
Towel
Closed toe shoes
Water shoes
Dress for the weather (we go rain or shine); if raining dress head to toe in rain gear to keep yourself 100% dry as we play outdoors all day in the rain! There is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing 🙂
