DESCRIPTION: William Byrd II described the Dismal Swamp as a “miserable morass where nothing can inhabit.” George Washington, on the other hand, visited in 1763 and declared it a “glorious paradise abounding in fowl and game.” You decide for yourself as we visit the current Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge. This spring tour will highlight the natural history of the Dismal Swamp including plant identification, migrating and resident bird species, reptiles and amphibians, and insect life. Elements of history and current refuge management will also be covered. Considerable walking is required as we will visit several boardwalk trails. A highlight of the trip will be lunch on an observation deck overlooking beautiful Lake Drummond, Virginia’s only natural lake.
