Ruth received her bachelor’s in physics from Stanford, and has dual engineering master’s degrees from University of Michigan. She has been an engineer for 32 years, at NASA Langley for the last 26 years.

Ruth is a member of Mothers Out Front, a diverse group of women working against climate change. She is also a member of the Hampton Roads Solar group; her home with solar power and a green roof has been on the annual tour since 2009. She received the Women of Distinction award from YWCA in 2017, and the Exemplar award from the Hampton Roads Gazetti in 2019.

Ruth led a group of parents in installing 700 kW of solar on Norfolk Academy, which was a $1M investment in solar panels, the largest school solar array in Hampton Roads. She recently started a Qualified Opportunity Zone Fund for installing solar on businesses and non-profits in low-income neighborhoods at no cost.
